The holographic universe

In The holographic universe Michael Talbot looks at the idea that the umverse might be like a hologram in the sense that each part of it contains the whole. Talbot uses the work of well known physicists to support his ideas, in particular that of David Bohm. Sensibly, he doesn't try to rewrite quantum physics - rather the prinicpal theme of the book is the link between these holographic ideas and what we consider to be paranormal events, starting with the mysterious healing powers which some people have. Talbot discusses how this might be related to the ability to percieve a Human Energy Field.

Talbot goes on to look at how the holographic nature of the universe means that our consciousness can experience other times and places, and at the evidence that we can recall previous lives. There is also a chapter on out of the body experiences and near death experiences.

What I liked about this book was that Talbot (for the most part) isn't trying to push his own dogmatic view of how the universe works onto the reader. This makes his description of paranormal events much more credible - indeed Talbot describes how from a young age he experienced such events, and only later came to find that others didn't believe in them. Personally I'm still skeptical, but if you want to look at the possibility of paranormal events then this would be a good place to start.

Product Description

Today nearly everyone is familiar with holograms, three-dimensional images projected into space with the aid of a laser. Now, two of the world's most eminent thinkers -- University of London physicists David Bohm, a former protege of Einstein's and one of the world's most respected quantum physicists, and Stanford neurophysiologist Karl Pribram, one of the architects of our modern understanding of the brain -- believe that the universe itself may be a giant hologram, quite literally a kind of image or construct created, at least in part, by the human mind. This remarkable new way of looking at the universe explains now only many of the unsolved puzzles of physics, but also such mysterious occurrences as telepathy, out-of-body and near death experiences, "lucid" dreams, and even religious and mystical experiences such as feelings of cosmic unity and miraculous healings.

Superb writing. *****
Full of research and personal stories. It shows how our belief systems create our reality.

A Thought Provoking Discussion ****
Other than a very rudimentary understanding, or rather acknowledgment of the existence of holograms/holographic science via watching too many Star Trek reruns, I hadn't the first clue the impact of holography. What this book does very well is offer some salient facts about the science as it relates to the deeper mysteries of life. Is this a science textbook? No! It is a well thought out, well written treatise on the possible implications of a holographic universe. Clearly, scientific materialists are not going to like this book as it speaks of things that can't be seen or measured, but what the hell is wrong with some discussion, some insight, inspiration, a "leap of faith" just to get the creative juices flowing?! I found this to be an exhilarating read.

Everybody chill out ***
Everybody has a bias, including me, though we usually don't admit it. Talbot, like many folks, early experienced the validity of what some like to think of as "paranormal crap." If you've had precognitive dreams, OBE, NDEs, etc., you get tired of people who think you're nuts, since you know what you've experienced, and you know what we call science and philosophy can be incredibly narrow-minded. (See Stephen Braude's works for a philosophical discussion of this point.) That said, Talbot, now deceased, did, in the second part of his book, employ very little skepticism in his discussion of so many areas of paranormal reality. However, the first part, where he discusses Bohm and Pribram, is about as lucid a discussion of holograms as I've seen in non-technical writings. So: buy the book for a good discussion of Bohm and Pribram, and take the rest with a grain of salt (though only if you have a scientistic bias will you find ALL of the rest to be "crap.")

One of the most valuable insights in history. *****
I don't recall how I became aware of this book, but after I read it (and as many of the author's references as I could find), I became convinced that the thesis that it promotes is one of the most significant ideas of our day. Unless I miss my guess, and I rarely do, these ideas will form the bases for reforming our notions of medicine, theology, philosophy, and virtually every other human endeavor.

A Must For Everyone On The Planet *****
I have finished half the book and ,with every chapter, become more convinced about the power of this book. Makes you wonder if some negatives in our world are already using some of these things against the good of society. All those that want an explaination of why things are as they are and how can we change it,,,,read this book.

Also, the connections to the paranormal is astounding and will help open you to understanding the paranormal world.

Amazing! *****
Your brain is a hologram. The cosmos is a hologram. Your body is a hologram. Your mind is a hologram. Dreams are holograms. The world you perceive around you is a hologram. There is an underlying order to everything from which reality is projected. This implicate order is also known as 'the zero point energy field'. It's like a piece of holographic film on which the universe is printed. Each part contains the whole. This book is a must read for anyone trying to do anything parapsychological, whether it's psychokenisis, remote viewing, spiritual healing, or predicting the future, what you are dealing with is a hologram. As an amature music recording artist, the part I found most interesting was the bit about using holography to create 3-D surround sound through a standard pair of earphones! do an internet search for 'cetera holophony algorithm'. This book has something for everyone in it.

LOVE THIS BOOK *****
The book not only provides a perspective of looking at the universe as holographic, but also provides an avalanche of very interesting stories.

As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, and a firm believer that there are no limitations to what we can experience and the changes we can create in our bodies and in our lives, even on genetic level, I wanted to share one of the stories from this book:

"Brocq's disease involves a horribly disfiguring hereditary condition. Victims of Brocq's disease develop a thick, horny covering over their skin that resembles the scales of a reptile. The skin can become so hardened and rigid that even the slightest movement will cause it to crack and bleed.

Brocq's disease was incurable until 1951 when a sixteen-year-old boy with an advanced case of the affliction was referred as a last resort to a hypnotherapist named A.A. Mason at the Queen Victoria Hospital in London. Mason discovered that the boy was a good hypnotic subject and could easily be put into a deep state of trance.

While the boy was in trance, Mason told him that his Brocq's disease was healing and would soon be gone. Five days later the scaly layer covering the boy's left arm fell off, revealing soft, healthy flesh beneath. By the end of tend days the arm was completely normal.

Mason and the boy continued to work on different body areas until all of the scaly skin was gone. The boy remained symptom-free for at least five years, at which point Mason lost touch with him.

This is extraordinary because Brocq's disease is a genetic condition, and getting rid of it involves more than just controlling autonomic processes such as blood flow patterns and various cells of the immune system. It means tapping into the masterplan, the DNA programming itself. So, it would appear that when we access the right strata of our beliefs, our minds can override even our genetic makeup.

Reality as Illusion **
I merely scraped a C grade in GCE O Level Physics but I had hoped that this book would be accessible for the layman interested in the radical implications of quantum theory. However I found "The Holographic Universe" to be a difficult read full of weighty philosophical and scientific theorising and a lot of it didn't make sense to me. The author starts off by proposing the existence of a holographic universe , apparently based on the fact that subatomic particles are actually insubstantial waveforms until they are observed at which stage only then do they become particles. Therefore our consciousness must in some way create what appears to be a solid reality out of nothing. I can accept that argument but I must admit that I found it hard to get my head around the fact that the universe is some kind of interactive 3D photographic projection. Most of "The Holographic Universe" uses this theory to explain away a wide variety of paranormal phenomena from stigmatism to telekinesis , from synchronicities to out of body and near death experiences. The author puts forward an impressive body of evidence to support the existence of these fascinating phenomena but I must admit that I didn't understand how this proved his theory of the holographic nature of the universe. This book would be of interest to those with a broad knowledge of physics and those with a deep knowledge of mystical ,esoteric philosophies, however I found it all to be a bit too obscure and deep to fully comprehend and enjoy. Perhaps someone might get round to writing a dumbed down version of this book to help us all to get enlightened !

Well documented book, fascinating stuff *****
Great read, keep an open mind. Very well known book in the quantum physics world, but don't be put off, the book is understandable, its up to you to look in these theories further.

Fantastic! *****
This book is probably the easiest to read on the planet when it comes to explaining quantum physics and how our universe and everything in it is basically the same as a hologram. It's a book that everybody interested in the nature of our reality should definitely read, whatever angle they are coming from!

Best book on this subject *****
Michael Talbot makes a very strong case that reality is but an illusion, a type of holograph constantly moving.

If your interested in this type of stuff this is the book to get. It is even better than David Icke's book "Infinite Love is the only Truth, Everything Else Is An Illusion."

Michael Talbot takes us through the world of quantum physics, psychology, medicine, and mysticism. It is a very easy book to read and once you start reading it it's hard to put it down.

From the scientific to the esoteric ****

In the introduction, the author clarifies terms like Holographic Universe, and concepts like the holographic analogy, metaphor or paradigm. The physicist Bohm and the quantum physicist Pribram are the originators of the idea. In this book, the theories and the conclusions of many researchers influenced by the holographic model and its interpretations are explored. Talbot warns that some interpretations are controversial and the book indeed strays into highly esoteric territory.

Part One: A Remarkable New View of Reality, looks at the work of Pribram and Bohm and how these two scientists teamed up. These two chapters, The Brain as Hologram and The Cosmos as Hologram, examines the vastness of memory, associative memories, photographic memory, phantom limb sensations, the transference of learnt skills and our amazing ability to recall, forget and recognize familiar things.

Part Two: Mind and Body, investigates the holographic model in psychology, the body, miracles and in the ability to see holographically. Phenomena like dreams, psychosis, lucid dreaming and holographic therapy are examined, with reference to the work of Stanislav Grof amongst others. The section on healing deals inter alia with the work of pioneers like Dr Carl Simonton and Larry Dossey, with emphasis on conscious and unconscious beliefs, acupuncture and the use of imagery (visualization).

In the chapter: A Pocketful of Miracles, there are discussions of psychokinesis, the kahunas of Hawaii, the work of Carlos Castaneda and the question of whether consciousness creates subatomic particles. The next chapter explores research on the human energy field, the energy field of the psyche, the aura and the chakras, x-ray vision and the altered states of shamanism.

Part Three: Space and Time, attempts to apply the holographic model to clairvoyance, retrocognition, ghosts and apparitions. It also explores the possibility of a holographic past and future and of thought as the creator of reality. Out-of-Body experiences, Near-Death experiences and their holographic explanation are discussed and there is an interesting section on the famous mystic Swedenborg. This part also looks at a variety of phenomena like Marian appearances, UFO's, the results of taking the herb ayahuasca and various shamanic experiences.

The chapter Return to Dreamtime revisits Bohm's idea of the implicate and explicate order and compares it to Tibetan Buddhism, Zen and Hinduism. In the next one: The Future of the Holographic Idea, the author investigates holographic sound with reference to the physiologist Hugo Zuccarelli, and speculates on the implications for science of the holographic paradigm. Amongst them are new kinds of computers and puzzles in chemistry that might finally be solved. The model might be able to eventually explain telepathy, synchronicity, paranormal and mystical experiences. The text concludes with Talbot's view of mankind's evolutionay thrust towards a higher consciousness.

The book contains voluminous notes arranged by chapter, and an index. The text is well-documented. The only problem is that there are repetitive accounts of well-known historical paranormal experiences that are already very familiar from the literature. Overall, The Holographic Universe contains enough purely scientific information to serve as a starting point, but it will appeal more to those who are into the metaphysical and spiritual side of things.

An excellent resource *****
The Holographic Universe is by far one of the best books quantum physics I've read. This book clearly presents a unified view of both science and spirituality.

Their are many mystical concepts that the author touches upon. The idea of a Collective Unconcious; that we all share a deeper racial memory is reminiscent of the later works of Carl Jung.

In addition, there is a small but helpful chapter devoted to Multiplicity or multiple personalities. The author articulates a theory that multiples exist as a collection of individual souls that exist in parallel dimensions as well as our own.

Physical differences are scientifically observed in different members of a multiple's system. A brain tumor is seen in the x-rays of a multiple patient. When the patient changes personalities, the brain tumor is no longer present.

I found his theories to be helpful and well thought out. For any student of psychology or self discovery, these ideas are are insightful and creative. There is a great deal we don't know and may never know. This book allows the reader the opportunity to go beyond their limited understanding of how their universe may exist.

A little too new age **
This book is interesting but ultimately is attempting to justify new agey feel good connectedness with a little pseudo science. Its nothing new. People have been using the wierdness of quantum theory to justify wacky meta-physical ideas since its inception.
The creditials of some of the thinkers doesn't cut it for me. Many brilliant scientists go non-linear as they get older trying to find some kind of spiritual meaning to existence. Not having traditional religion they create their own using questionable interpretations of modern physics. An excellent example of this is Tipler's 'The Physics of Immortality' where he invents his own heaven complete with all the trapping of eternal bliss in paradise. And he 'proves' it using modern cosmology. Wow.
I only write this review to warn people that are looking for science not meta-physical speculation. I bought this book without a lot of checking and thought I was getting a discourse on the holographic model used in cosmology as an information theoretic approach to physics. See for example Lee Smolin 'The Three Roads to Quantum Gravity'. Instead I got a lot of wild speculation based on anecdotes of ESP,Coincidences and miracle healings. This just isn't science. To quote the late Carl Sagan. 'Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence'.
